Education Series – Types of Document Scanners: Part 4

Recap:  There are four types of document scanners.

  1. Flatbed
  2. Sheet Feed (DIN A4 / Letter and Large Format Sheet Feed scanners)
  3. Planetary
  4. Duplex Sheet Feed in Large Format
Image Access is the first scanner manufacturer worldwide to offer a large format duplex sheet feed scanner, enabling operators to scan both sides of a page in a single pass through the scanner.

The WideTEK 36 DS scans double-sided printed documents up to 36 inches (915 mm) in width. At a resolution of 300 dpi the scanner needs only 2.5 seconds to scan the front and back sides of a newspaper page.

The idea of double-sided scanning in one production step primarily means less production effort: a document no longer needs to be flipped over and scanned again on the other side.

That makes the scanner ideal for press clipping, archiving and library services.

So how does it work?  The scanner has two camera boxes, both consisting of three CCD systems, integrated into the upper and lower part of the device. The WideTEK 36 DS captures both sides of the newspaper at the same time.

After scanning, software separates the scanned document into four single images; capturing the left and right half of the front and back of the newspaper – everything in one single step.

Special transport rollers, with individually spring loaded ball bearing pairs serving as pressure points; ensure the best possible gentle document transport. This makes it possible to digitize even historical and fragile documents without damage to the source document.

New Markets for Wide Format Scanners – Media

The media market has always been in the background with wide format applications. Over the years, microfilm has been the dominant choice for archiving newspaper files. And, it is important to note that newspaper companies DO still have archives of hard copy files that need addressing. Changes in technology, such as with the innovative WideTEK 36DS, the world’s only wide format duplex scanner, offer media companies an alternative to the traditional microfilm format. With one pass through the scanner, users can capture both sides of a two-sided document in just 4 seconds.

Creative reprographers are implementing the WideTEK 36DS in their workflow and opening up new revenues streams.  One company has a small media services account that generates an additional $10,000 in scanning revenue scanning two-sided magazine files.  Some other benefits of scanning with wide format scanners:

  • OCR of text after scanning with third party softwares
  • Barcode capability with third party softwares
  • Use of scanning hardware for all the other wide format applications
  • Getting two scanners in one platform with the WideTEK 36DS

WideTEK 36DS: Where Does It Fit?

In today’s North American economic climate, I weekly meet with resellers who are looking for ways to generate new revenue streams for their businesses.  The wide format market has changed drastically.  Gone are the days of reprographers printing large volumes of monochrome sets of engineering drawings, and selling hardware to just the traditional architectural, engineering and construction markets.  Color digital output, cloud applications and doing business in the non-traditional markets are part of the now and future in wide format business.

The successful resellers are developing business opportunities in new areas such as media services and public relations, as well as unique government departments.  The WideTEK 36DS duplex scanner is the ideal fit for these new opportunities.  WideTEK 36DS is the best fit for:

  • Media services businesses (newspaper and magazine companies)
  • Public relations companies
  • County government departments (plat room archives)

Virtually everything the above applications need to scan is in a TWO-SIDED format!  With one pass through the scanner, both sides of the document, up to 36 inches in width is captures in FOUR SECONDS at 300dpi.  Eliminating the need to scan one side and then flip the document over to capture the other side means more productivity, significantly reduced labor costs and more profits for both you and your customer.  So start looking for those unique opportunities, trust me they are out there.  Contact me if you want some more ideas and some testimonials from other wide format companies who have experienced success with the WideTEK 36DS.
