We are delighted about our successful collaboration with CarboScreen, a start-up company from the Institute of Textile Technology at RWTH Aachen University that specializes in quality control for carbon fiber products. CarboScreen relies on our Widescanbars – an innovative solution that creates high-precision scans of various materials. With the help of advanced software and AI analysis, damage and irregularities in carbon fiber and composite material production are reliably detected and documented.
High-Performance Materials Deserve High-Performance Processes
Carbon fibers are transforming modern industry. They’re light and strong – key to the energy and mobility transition. From wind turbines and aircraft to cars and racing bikes, carbon is replacing steel and aluminum wherever strength meets the need for low weight.
From Lab to Industry
In 2023, three researchers from RWTH Aachen University took the leap from the lab to the production floor. Felix Pohlkemper, Musa Akdere, and Tim Röding founded CarboScreen GmbH with one goal:
to develop sensor technology capable of monitoring high-performance fibers in real time – making manufacturing processes safer, more efficient, and more intelligent.
WideSCAN Bar as the Sensing Foundation
To bring their vision to life, CarboScreen needed a sensor system that was both robust and modular.
The WideSCAN™ systems from Image Access proved to be the ideal solution, forming the technological foundation of the CarboScan system.
To handle the challenges of fiber and composite production, such as airborne fiber particles or splashing fluids, CarboScreen developed a custom protective housing for the WideSCAN sensor and designed the CarboBox as a dedicated control unit. It combines data acquisition and analysis with seamless Power-over-Ethernet transmission, enabling easy integration into existing production environments.
AI-Driven Quality Assurance
What the sensor sees, the AI understands.
The CarboScreen software is used to visualize, analyze, and automatically evaluate sensor data.
Production deviations are detected and classified before they cause defects – a decisive step toward zero-defect manufacturing.
Award-Winning Innovation
The result: a technology recognized with multiple awards, including the AVK Innovation Award 2023, and showcased at JEC World 2025 in Paris.
And this is just the beginning – the technology’s potential extends far beyond carbon fiber, to any industry where precision, automation, and quality define success.
CarboScreen proves: When materials reach peak performance, processes must keep up.
